Notes: Printed in Spain. Translated from the 1931 Editions Casterman of Tournai publication, which followed a 1931 Les Editions du Petit Vingtième version and the 1930 serial publication in Le Petit Vingtième. These versions differ significantly from later versions. According to a foreword by the translators, "the young Hergé reflects the colonial attitudes of the time. He himself admitted that he depicted his Africans according to the bourgeois, paternalistic stereotypes of the period. The same may be said of his treatment of big-game hunting and his attitude toward animals."
