The Dragon of Solvanthia awakes after the Sword of Graven is stolen. Conan finds the Sword and Valen Triafer and the villagers of Solvanthia trick him into being a sacrifice for the Dragon. Valen changes his mind about betraying Conan and jumps into a pit after him, bringing the Sword of Graven to him. The Dragon confronts them. Valen reveals to Conan that the people of Solvanthia had tricked him into coming there so that he could be sacrificed. The Dragon escapes the pit and destroys most of Solvanthia until Conan kills it with the Sword of Graven.

Conan takes Peleon out into the Cimmerian wilds to show him how to be a man. After fighting some Picts, Peleon angers a bear and ends up being captured by Conobar. Angered over the death of his bear-servant, Conobar attacks and tries to kill Conan. Killing him in self defense, Conan mourns him after realising he was his son via his encounter with Ursla many years before.
