While bird-hunting with Sir George Mordaunt Devil Doone discusses the disappearance of Patrol Leader Brinsley and his men. The patrol went missing while on a mission to learn more about a strange disease that's befallen the locals. Doone sets out to find the missing patrol and encounters Ido Nakamura, a former officer in the Japanese army who has discovered a deadly mold and is using it for malign purposes. It's up to Doone to stop him and rescue Brinsley and his men, held captive by the murderous Nakamura.

Doone goes to visit his old friend Emu Jones in the hospital, where he is recovering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Jones was droving cattle for Pete Mullaly when he ran into men who were stealing and slaughtering livestock to sell the meat on the black market. After Police Inspector Frayne interrogates one of the butchers who received the stolen beef Doone takes his place as the new owner of a butcher shop, and soon finds himself dealing directly with the black marketeers.

A desperate young woman is about to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge when Doone drives by and steps in to stop her at the last second. Later, over drinks at Doone's flat, he learns the reason for her distress. She's Carmel Rigby, daughter of a wealthy industrialist, and she's deep in debt to Crow Garner, owner of the Crow's Nest, a gambling joint. Garner is known for victimizing the young and naive. Carmel is scheduled to meet with Garner to settle her debt, but he wants her to bring along a friend. So Doone calls on the help of attractive Bunty St. Clair to act as her "friend".

While seeing someone off at the airport Doone runs into his old friend Emu Jones, and learns of labor trouble at a mine in Papua, New Guinea. After receiving a letter from military intelligence Doone meets with Major Hacking, and is assigned to look into the trouble in Papua. Once in New Guinea Doone and Emu meet with the mine's overseer, Sir Seymour Trevally, and learn that the miners may be planning an armed uprising with the help of a mysterious woman known as "The Star of the North". Doone and Emu then set off into the jungle, with the mine as their destination.
