Synopsis: Luthor has been kidnapped and hung upside-down off the top of a building. He flashes back to how he got into the situation, starting with his quest to get back the power of a Black Lantern Ring. He and his robot assistant Lois had tracked down the locations of residual black ring energy, but were stopped by the kidnapping. Luthor discovers the brain behind his capture was Mister Mind.

Synopsis: Lex is forced to dream various scenarios by Mister Mind: A caveman bringing fire to his people, Dr. Frankenstein, a western sheriff, and Super-Lex. But Lex is able to fashion the dreams himself, and eventually is able to take control and kick Mister Mind off of the building's roof. Despite not knowing who is behind Mister Mind, Luthor continues his quest for the Black Lantern ring energy, and hires a guide to the first location.

Synopsis: Deathstroke leads Luthor and his team to the Ross Ice Shelf to find a dark ring energy sphere. Locating it, they discover it's been there for billions of years. Suddenly, Deathstroke goes crazy and attacks, and slowly everyone else starts going mad, and fighting each other. But as Spalding completes his analysis, the sphere suddenly changes energy, and the madness stops. Meanwhile, Gorilla Grodd checks on another sphere.

Synopsis: Luthor and his team continue their quest for the Black Ring energy, this time to Uganda, where they are being monitored by Gorilla Grodd. Grodd sends his apes to kidnap RoboLois, discovering she's a robot. He then attacks the team directly, beheading Luthor with his combat spoon and eating his head; but he finds it's another robot. Instead, Luthor has infiltrated Grodd's headquarters, where a black sphere is. After getting what they want, they escape in a chopper, but Grodd returns in time to shoot Luthor with a raygun rifle, and Luthor falls to a likely death.

Synopsis: Lex finds himself with Death, gazing on his own body (after it was shot in the last issue). She gives him a life review. Lex tries arguing for his life, tries to bribe her, tries to gain her sympathy; but she's heard it all before. She gets his views on the afterlife, and Lex refuses to accept his fate. But he doesn't have to; Death reveals to him that he's not dead, and indeed, he awakens back in his jet, quite alive.

Synopsis: In 1358, Vandal Savage has protected the black spheres that he's discovered, creating a trap as he knows Luthor will eventually find them (though he doesn't know who he is). He checks on the building again over the centuries, but in the late 20th century, he recognizes Luthor in a newspaper. Within a few years, they meet, but Luthor has no interest in befriending Savage. In the present, Luthor figures out that he needs to change all the spheres, and does so. Savage notices his have changed. He then confronts Luthor in his boardroom after sabotaging the building, but Luthor still has an ace.
