The ghost artist here is Mike Arens. He is not credited to Red Ryder in Jerry Bails' Who's Who, but it is him. The horses at the bottom on page two, and the scenery is sure Arens. On page nine we have some of his small silhouettes, and on page ten is to notice the angular gun holster with one strap across. As only Arens makes them. Both layout and inking is Arens, but a little imitation of Harman on faces.

Pete Alvarado is credited as ghost artist to Red Ryder in Jerry Bails' Who's Who for 1955. This is one of the stories. The faces with peering, small eyes, awkward hands and movement. Even the heads of the horses points to him. The panel where Duchess throws the rock is almost an exact copy of Gene Autry from an illustration in a Whitman book by Alvarado. The inking is more marked here, but rendering of the hands is similar, so he must have inked it too.

This artwork reminds me of Hi Mankin. The horses with heads very wide across the eyes, and their lively leg movement could point to Hi Mankin, as the arm swinging of the mail driver. The inking can be an imitation of Harman. He is not credited as ghost to Red Ryder by Jerry Bails' Who's Who. Neither is Arens in the first story. Could it really be Mankin?
