Synopsis: Sonja has ruled for a year as queen of Sogaria but, having refused to take a king and with the Winter promising a harsh famine, she finds she has a rebellion on her hands. Lord Ariok mounts an attack on the port city of Astahan and Sonja is forced to move out quickly to defend it. Sonja wins the day but an unfamiliar crest on the inside of an enemy breastplate sends her racing back to Issenni to get some answers.

Synopsis: Sonja learns that the crest she found secreted on Ariok's standard bearer belongs to the first kings of Sogaria who were supposedly incredibly evil and thought to have been long dead. When she returns to her army, still cleaning up after the battle of Astahan, she finds that her men have captured Ariok and his little sister. Finding her enemy to be somewhat noble, Sonja agrees to meet with him in single combat and promises to keep his true lineage a secret should she win the fight.

Synopsis: Alethia stops the duel between Ariok and Sonja when it looks like his brother is about to kill the queen. Ariok and Alethia are brought back to Issenni under Sonja's protection and the queen finds she likes her new guest very much. Ariok tells her of his cursed magical sword that has all but taken over his life. Sonja actually speaks to the sword and the weapon informs her that Ariok is hiding a terrible secret.

Synopsis: Ranivald and his men sneak into Ariok's bed chamber and stab him multiple times. Close to death, Ariok sends his sister Alethia down to the crypts to retrieve his magic sword. Restored by his weapon, Ariok and his sister flee the castle, thinking Sonja had a hand in the assassination attempt. Sonja gives chase, wanting to set things right, and catches up with Ariok. She is attacked by a demon dog and kills it, realizing too late that this is the transformed Aletheia. Now knowing Ariok's terrible secret, Sonja asks him to stay but he declines and leaves in his grief.
