Praise God above all.
With the French undercutting the Dutch fur trade, van den Bogaert and his party set off on a mission of investigation and negotiation. Despite the harsh winter they travel to numerous towns and villages in Iroquois-ruled country, now upstate New York. They meet a generally friendly reception, and learn much of Iroquois life, but the Mohawks and Oneidas make numerous demonstrations of strength, and negotiate to their own best advantage.

1 January
In negotiations with Arenias and with the Onnedaeges, the Dutch party comes to a mutually advantageous agreement. They are feasted, promised a welcome throughout the region for a summer visit, and invited to witness an exorcism. The way back to Fort Orange is harsh in the winter weather, but Arenias and his people guide them through.

Others keep a snake, a turtle, a swan, a crane, a pigeon and such similar objects for idols or telling fortunes
Van den Bogaert writes disparagingly of the Iroquois enthusiasm for fetishes, not recognizing that he is clutching a cross as he writes.
