Synopsis:
With the French undercutting the Dutch fur trade, van den Bogaert and his party set off on a mission of investigation and negotiation. Despite the harsh winter they travel to numerous towns and villages in Iroquois-ruled country, now upstate New York. They meet a generally friendly reception, and learn much of Iroquois life, but the Mohawks and Oneidas make numerous demonstrations of strength, and negotiate to their own best advantage.
