President Ulysses S. Grant orders Indian fighter Johnny MacKay to negotiate with the Modocs to leave Lost River Valley and return to their reservation at Fort Klamath. The catch is that MacKay has to deal with renegade Modoc leader Captain Jack by peaceful means, despite Jack's fondness for violence.
