Feeling that he has been treated unfairly, Thomas Logan forces Rose to help him sneak into the Howlett bedchamber. John finds Thomas attempting to abduct his wife and interferes. Drawn by the commotion, James arrives just in time to see Thomas shoot his father in the head. As James goes after Thomas, bone claws emerge from the back of his hands and he stabs Thomas to death.

James Howlett has just killed Thomas Logan, his father's murderer, with bone claws that have emerged from the back of his hands. Disconcerted by what is happening to him, things don't get much better for James when his mother calls him an abomination and throws him out, right before she kills herself. His grandfather, too, has little empathy but does give Rose some money so she can take James far away, never to return. As Rose and James travel to a distant mining camp, she is concerned at his lapses in memory and astonished by his quick healing ability. She gives James' name as "Logan."

James and Rose live in a tough Canadian mining camp, working hard for their daily bread. Still quiet and weak, James is bullied by the camp's cook who takes every opportunity provided to torture the boy. As the years pass, James, now going by the name Logan, becomes stronger and fiercer as Rose constantly worries about the fundamental change in her companion. When Logan is accosted by the cook once again, he refuses to defend himself, instead running into the woods where he is set upon by a pack of wolves.

Logan [James Howlett]; Rose; Smitty; Cookie Malone; Grandfather Howlett; Dog (cameo)
By day, Logan works in a quarry, mining stone and becoming a valuable member of the camp. By night, Logan runs with a pack of wolves, hunting and letting his bestial side run free. When Logan gets promoted to dynamite duty, the camp cook, who hates him, snips the fuses and causes some of the miners to get caught in a cave-in. Logan survives and finally has a showdown with his tormenter, Cookie. He also finds Rose smooching up on the camp boss, Smitty. Back in Alberta, Logan's grandfather, who is on his death bed, sends Dog out to bring James home.

Logan [James Howlett]; Rose (death); Smitty; Cookie Malone; Dog
Wolverine is angry that Rose has decided to marry Smitty and leave their life at the mining camp but this doesn't stop him from throwing a boxing match with his boss so that he can win the prize money to finance their journey. After the bout is over, Logan's old life catches up with him as Dog arrives and begins to beat him down. As Dog boasts about killing Logan's father and watching his mother kill herself, Logan pops his claws and begins to tear apart his old friend. A horrified Rose tries to intervene and Logan accidentally stabs and kills her. Logan leaves to live with the wolves.
