Richie Rich; Richard Rich; out-of-work actor; Freckles Friendly; Peewee Friendly; shack-dwelling family; sheriff
Mr. Rich gives Richie one hundred dollars, challenging him to invest it wisely. Richie lends the money to an out-of-work actor, to his friends, who want to purchase a newsstand, and to a family that is about to be evicted from their shack. When Richie tells his father how he used the money, Mr. Rich commends Richie on his generosity, but tells him that from a business perspective his decisions were a flop. However, in each case, Richie's debtors return the funds with interest very quickly, their fortunes having turned due to Richie's "investment".

The term "rugged" is used several times throughout the story, but the story title is "Ragged Individual". This could be a jab at Mr. Rich, who turns out not to be that rugged, or it could be simply an error.
