Continued in X-MEN #94.

Sources for particularization of story/script credits are The Marvel Comics Index (Olshevsky 1981) and The Official Marvel Index to the X-Men (Olshevsky 1987).

Peter Iro is credited with background inks in many sources, but none of his work was in the finished product, per Dave Cockrum: "First--your listing of X-Men Special Edition #1 lists Peter Iro as one of the creative team on Giant-Size X-Men #1. It's about time somebody put the lie to this one: Pete Iro did indeed try his hand at inking my backgrounds on FIVE PAGES ONLY. [Emphasis his] Even if a background assistant completes a full job, he gets no credit whatsoever for having worked on the job. But aside from that, the five pages he inked were so crudely and amateurishly butchered that I was forced to white out all his work and re-ink those pages myself. In view of this fact, it's obvious why I resent Iro being listed as having worked on the book: I inked that book entirely, and no one else." (The Comic Reader #208)

Marvel consistently credits this cover to Marie Severin and Sal Buscema. The original art was signed Sal Buscema (info submitted by mikebo via the GCD Error Tracker). Buscema fully rendered a Severin sketch for the cover of #69, so it seems likely that was the process here.

Before the discovery of the original art, we had previously considered several possibilities: Sal Buscema pencils and Al Milgrom inks with the Storm figure penciled and inked by Dave Cockrum per Steve Whitaker; Dave Cockrum pencils with Sal Buscema inks (with alterations on Cyclops, Colossus, and Professor X by Romita) per Nick Caputo; Marvel's Official Index to the X-Men #2 gives the penciller as Marie Severin and the inker as Sal Buscema; Sal Buscema pencils and unknown inks per the original indexer.

Illustration of the Outsiders by Cockrum dated in 1973.

Includes this note: "It's hard to believe in today's world where they're global icons, but the X-Mem were cancelled in 1970. Two years later, Marvel Editor in Chief Roy Thomas soughtto revive Marvel's Mutants with a New international cast. Writer Mike Frederich and artist Dave Cockrum discussed the concept with Thomas, but the X-Men's return wouldn't hit newsstands for another three years. Meanwhile, Cockrum pitched a team called the "The Outsiders" to DC Comics as a spin-off his work on Legion of Super-Heroes. DC rejected the Outsiders and in 1974 Cockrum joined writer Len Wein to make the international X-Men a reality. Together, they built on and evolved concepts from the Outsiders to create key menbers of the All-New, All-Different X-Men."
