In order to qualify for a job at her fiancé Edward’s private school, Ellen takes a job teaching in Edgetown. She makes friends with mailman Michel and his little brother Timmie. Ellen and Michel fall in love, although she’s engaged to Edward. Ellen begins an adult education program and becomes popular with the townspeople, but leaves for her new job. She becomes bored there and Edward breaks up with her, so Ellen returns to Michel and Edgetown.

Anne and her fiancé Ronnie return to his hometown where he intends to replace his father as the local country doctor. Anne finds this life is “disorganized” and “thankless,” and says she won’t marry Ronnie unless he moves back to the city. He agrees, but changes his mind after he saves a young boy’s life. Anne prepares to leave, but changes her mind when she sees how Ronnie’s father is appreciated by his neighbors and how Mrs. Adams supported him.
