Rose has a crush on Ted, who passes by her office every day. He asks Rose's sister to book him an excursion to New York to see a show, and Rose buys one for herself as well. Ted is engaged to someone else, but doesn’t really care for her. Rose and Ted agree to pretend to have just met. They have a good time in the city but when they get home, gossip spreads about them, helped by Rose using a party line telephone to give her sister the details. Ted breaks up with his fiancee and proposes to Rose.

Lila is raised by her widowed mother. Running a successful dress shop, Lila’s mother sacrifices to put Lila through school, but expects her to conform to her wishes. While staying with her mother at their summer cottage, Lila meets Hank but her mother dismisses him as “a playboy musician!” Lila resists Hank’s romantic attractions and her mother takes her back to the city. Lila is courted by wealthy Edward, who introduces her to Hank: he’s actually a research chemist in Edward's factory. Hank prevents a fire from spreading and Lila realizes she loves him, despite her mother.

Bernice Lawson; Ray Hunt; Mr. Swanson
Bernice is studying to become a veterinarian and ignores the “derision” of her male classmates. The exception is Ray; they date and when they graduate Bernice and Ray work in adjoining counties. Bernice doesn’t know the cause of a cattle epidemic and is irritated when Ray is called in and solves the mystery. Bernice thinks this is because she’s a woman, and she ignores his remedy. The disease spreads. To clear herself, Bernice blames this on Ray and he’s fired. Bernice admits her guilt and loses her own job. Ray, reinstated, offers her the job as his assistant and she accepts.
