Keena, Brave Eagle's adopted son, overhears him talking to a brave whose son had joined a group of renegades to steal gold in exchange for rifles. Brave Eagle has left the brave's son at the fort to pay for his crimes. Keena thinks Brave Eagle should not have left the youth and decides to return to the Lotas, his original tribe. There Keena finds the white gun traders have set up camp to await the return of the council to determine if the tribe will trade its gold for guns.
