Karen goes on vacation to Florida and meets artist Pete, who saves her from drowning but is otherwise hostile. Kay arrives, claiming to be his fiancée. Pete says she broke his heart but he now loves Karen. Kay wants Pete to stay with her advertising agency and threatens to blacklist him unless Karen leaves. Karen decides to go but Pete catches her and says Kay tore up his contract, so they can now be together.

Psychiatrist Jim prevents Kit from committing suicide over a failed love affair. They become friends. He’s a widower and 20 years older than she, but asks Kit to marry him. Pat, the girlfriend of Jim’s son Paul, thinks Kit is a gold-digger like she is. When Kit tells Paul about Pat, he says he knew it all along; he then proposes to Kit himself. To avoid hurting Jim, Kit leaves but he tracks her down and says if she doesn’t love him then he wants her to marry Paul instead. She does.

Ruth is engaged to oil driller Roy but finds herself attracted to his gambler friend Johnny. Roy says he lost his well to Johnny. Ruth dares Johnny to wager the oil well against her love; if he wins, he gets her and the well. If he loses, he’ll leave town and Roy and Ruth will marry. They match cards and Johnny admits defeat. Ruth weds Roy and a year later Johnny sends her a note; he really won the bet but realized he didn’t deserve her love.
