BILLY!
Ianthe has The Will restrained and tethered to a magical VCR through which she can monitor his memories. Via this device we are able to see a story from The Will's and The Brand's childhood involving their physically and emotionally abusive Dad being murdered by their Uncle Steve in front of them with an axe. Uncle Steve identifies himself a Freelancer named The Letter and he takes the kids to raise them. This event was a likely catalyst for young Billy's and Sophie's entrance into the Freelancer career path. Ianthe also views memories involving The Stalk and Gwendolyn.

I'm sorry you had to see this.
Hungry, Ghüs and Squire go hunting in the Barrens for the Dread Naught, a large creature which is invisible until its death except to the robots, who can see its internal organs. The Dread Naught comes up behind Ghüs and knocks him to the side, leaving Squire to dispatch the beast. Staring into its eyes with his arrow cocked, he finds he is not up to the task. He lowers his head in disappointment and the Dread Naught becomes invisible, and leaves. Ghüs and Squire head back home to find that Marko, Alana, and the rest of the treehouse gang have returned with food, and Squire meets his father.
