High school student Leslie grows up a tomboy, participating in sports and never going on dates. When neighbor Dan returns from college, he kisses Leslie but suggests she become more feminine. Leslie overhears her older sister Marianne saying she’s going to the prom with Dan, so Leslie uses the money she was saving to buy a target rifle to pay for a makeover instead. Everyone is astonished at Leslie’s transformation. Marianne admits she and Dan were just pretending to have a romance to make Leslie jealous enough to shed her tomboy image.

When Hugh receives a job offer in another state, he asks Joan to move there with him, but she refuses. “If your career means more to you than being my wife...there is nothing to say!” Hugh replies and they break up. However, Joan comes to realize her personal life is empty even though she’s successful at her career. She and Hugh get back together.

Jennifer marries Dusty after a whirlwind courtship and they move to his family farm in Kansas. Dusty’s brother Robbie also lives there: he is mentally challenged and “like...a child” after being thrown from a horse. Robbie is friendly but makes Jennifer nervous; she urges Dusty to send Robbie to an institution, or she’ll leave. When a tornado threatens the farm, Jennifer has to knock out a panicked Robbie in order to take him to safety in the storm cellar. Miraculously, the blow on his head brings Robbie back to normal. Jennifer and Dusty can now be happy.
