It's possible that my love of The PLAIN Janes has nothing to do with the fact that I have no doubt that when I was a teenager, being an art nerd saved my life.

The PLAIN Janes
The PLAIN Janes [People Loving Art In Neighborhoods; Jane Beckles [Main Jane]; Jane [Drama Jane]; Jayne [Brain Jane]; Polly Jane; James]; Mr. Beckles; Mrs. Beckles; Damon; Cindy Sanchez; John Doe [Miroslaw Raminski]; Officer Sanchez; Ms. Miko
Metro City. Last spring. When it happened, I fell.
Main Jane is wounded in a terrorist bombing, but helps save a nameless victim who spends months in a coma. Her frightened parents move the family from Metro City to suburbia, where she discovers three other girls named Jane in her new high school. Main Jane leads them to form a secret art gang and paint the town P.L.A.I.N. - People Loving Art In Neighborhoods, using art attacks to help get them through the hell that is high school. Their attacks enrage the police, but a greater crisis comes when she learns that John Doe has awakened, and been returned to his home in Poland.

The PLAIN Janes
The PLAIN Janes [People Loving Art In Neighborhoods; Jane Beckles [Main Jane]; Jane [Theater Jane]; Jayne [Brain Jane]; Polly Jane; James]; Mr. Beckles; Mrs. Beckles; Damon; Cindy Sanchez; John Doe [Miroslaw Raminski]; Officer Sanchez; Ms. Miko; Mr. Yamamoto; Rizwan; Melvin; Isaac; Dino Salar; Rhys
I can't believe it's been nearly a year since it happened.
Damon is arrested for the New Years PLAIN attack, and Main Jane's mother withdraws even farther from the world. Drama Jane travels to the city to throw her heart at the feet of an actor, as Main Jane applies for an art grant; both are disappointed. Main Jane comforts herself with letters from Poland, and all the girls find dates for the prom, which they turn into a PLAIN attack to applause from their schoolmates, finally forcing the municipality to accept the PLAIN projects for which they have, at last, received their grant. Mrs. Beckles leaves the house to join the celebration.

The PLAIN Janes
PLAIN [Jane Beckles [Main Jane]; Jane [Drama Jane]; Jayne [Brain Jane]; Polly Jane; James]; Mr. Beckles; Mrs. Beckles; Damon; Cindy Sanchez; John Doe [Miroslaw Raminski]; Gita (Miroslaw's girl friend); Officer Sanchez; Ms. Miko: Mr. Yamamoto; Payne
With the support of this council and the grant we received, we're looking at multiple spaces around town for site-specific art pieces.
Main Jane spends the summer in France, assisting Gita as she teaches art. Back at home each of the group is spinning away, finding new focus during senor year. New girl Payne disdains the collective's work as institutional, and makes secret art attacks of her own... Officer Sanchez assumes that PLAIN is violating its agreements. Eventually Jane and Payne learn from each other artistically. A lockdown drill immobilizes Jane in flashbacks, but she rouses herself to interpose her body when the city tries to bulldoze the art park, and most of the high school joins her.
