Humphrey works as a blacksmith, and when cowboys come to have their horses re-shod, they are impressed with Humphrey's strength. They ask Humphrey to come participate in their rodeo. Humphrey give it a try, but, between his unwillingness to hurt any creature, and his constant hunger, his interest soon fades.

Humphrey travels to Joe Palooka's training camp on his bicycle, with a home-built shed trailer. On the way, he give a ride to a hobo, who steals him blind. Now without the means to feed himself on the way, Humphrey soon becomes overcome with hunger, and stops in a local town. There happens to be a pie-eating contest, and Humphrey wins, smashing the local records.

When Knobby Walsh's car breaks down on the way to Joe Palooka's training camp, he turns into a garage in West Wokkington Falls, Ohio for help, and meets Humphrey Pennyworth. Impressed by Humphrey's incredible strength, he tries to tempt the peaceful Humphrey into a career in the ring. When Knobby tells Humphrey's sister, Prunella, of how much prize money could be contributed to the charities she loves, Humphrey agrees to his first fight, which he wins with one punch.
