Lem believes in killing people he robs to avoid witnesses. When Slim is injured during a holdup Lem abandons him and frames him for a policeman's murder. Philip sends Slim to the electric chair and Lem tries to murder Philip in revenge, but only kills Madge instead. Philip begins a dedicated campaign to get Lem. Lem and Jane change their features with plastic surgery but Philip ambushes them before they can get out of New York. Lem abandons Jane to her death then dies in a hail of police bullets.

Kid Melton became a criminal at a young age and never stood up for his allies, turning on his friend Pinky in court. After getting out of reform school, Melton went to work for Rip Murdock but killed him to steal his moll, Margie. Melton turned the gang's activities into smuggling, but they all turned against him because of his conceited personality. Shortly after executing Melton in a driveby, the gang is arrested by the police and FBI.
