This appears to be a fictional depiction of real-life composer and bandleader Harry Owens, best known at the time of this story's publication as the conductor on the "Hawaii Calls" radio program. During the story, Owens sings a portion of "Too Marvelous For Words," a Johnny Mercer-written song introduced in early 1937 in the film "Ready, Willing and Able" and recorded that same year by Bing Crosby.

Captain Gould, Henri Duval (death)
This is the third murder victim we've found with the initials "H.D." on his forehead!
Henri Duval is an artist, whose talents are termed mediocre. Those judges, in turn, die mysteriously, impossibly, with the initials “HD” on their forehead. By painting their portraits, whatever fate he paints for them, their body actually goes through. He's about to paint a fiery death for a bound Dr. Occult when the police burst in. He kills himself by quickly drawing a dagger on his own portrait to avoid capture.

The Henri Duval in this story is not connected to the same-named swordsman who appeared in a self-titled feature in New Fun #6 and More Fun #7 to 10, all also by Siegel and Shuster.
