After her father’s death, Kay’s mother Fran sends her to school in Switzerland. When she returns, Fran tries to keep Kay hidden so that her suitor Hervey won’t know she has an 18-year-old daughter. In revenge, Kay sets out to conquer the middle-aged Hervey. When she visits Hervey’s island home, she meets his grown son Bob. Fran also arrives and is upset, but Hervey says he realizes Kay is too young for him and he really prefers Fran. Kay flees in a boat but has to be rescued by Bob, who says he loves her.

“Plain” Thelma feels she is unattractive to men. She works as a librarian and becomes friends with Mike, but falls in love with handsome author Tony. Tony romances her only to pick her brain for new story ideas. When he becomes famous, Tony drops Thelma. She attempts suicide by jumping off a bridge, but is rescued. She undergoes a makeover, becomes beautiful and vows revenge on Tony. Tony falls in love with the "new" Thelma but she reveals her identity, mocks him and has to be rescued by Mike. Thelma tries to commit suicide again, but is rescued once more and reconciles with Mike.

Mary rejects the marriage proposal of Tom, a fellow guest at a dude ranch, because he’s rich and she’s just a poor stenographer. Ranch owner Mrs. Kane tells the story of her youthful romance with ranch foreman Fred. Fred grew jealous of visitor Winslow, but when Fred was menaced by rustlers, Princess saved his life. They married and named their home “Valentine Ranch.” Mary and Tom get back together.

Wealthy Dona is courted by Jeff but just before their wedding learns he is a fortune hunter. Dona breaks their engagement, changes her name, and moves to the city, getting a job in a law firm. She and young lawyer Tom fall in love, but when he learns she’s a “missing heiress” he feels the socio-economic gulf is too great and breaks up with her. Dona’s father has Tom hired by one of his law firms at a higher salary. When Tom learns this, he says “I’m not taking your charity” but Dona’s father says “you’re worth more than I’m paying you.” Tom and Dona reconcile and will wed.

Nancy won't marry horse trainer Dan because she feels he can’t give her the financial security she wants. She becomes engaged to wealthy Dwight. However, when she learns Dwight has bribed a jockey to throw a race to ruin Dan financially, Nancy has her brother Tippy ride the horse to win. She and Dan marry. Joan decides she’ll “obey my heart…instead of my head” and will wed Dick.
