Synopsis:
Freahulf is captured by raiding Swedes who kill the royal envoy sent to fetch her. King Beowulf orders an attack on the Swedes, but before he can complete the order, he collapses, sorely ill. Daeghred, father of Freahulf, finds the dead envoy and discovers his daughter is missing. He goes to Eowanda, Thane of Bagarth, for help but is rebuffed. Eowanda then gets news of Beowulf's illness and begins to plot. The sickened King has recovered but cannot lead his soldiers and so orders his First Councilman Eadstan to do so and to be wary of Eowanda, as Beowulf's vision showed treachery by Eowanda.
