Ruth’s father grooms her to be a tennis champion to the exclusion of all else. When she sneaks out to the prom with Jim, her father fakes a heart attack. Jim gets a job offer “in the East” and proposes to Ruth: “you’ll have to choose between your father and me!” She chooses Jim but her father has another “attack” to keep her with him. Three years later, Ruth is in the finals of the national singles tournament, but meets Jim, now a sportswriter. She stands up to her father, wins the championship, and will marry Jim.

After Brenda’s father is killed on a hunting expedition, her mother makes her promise to never marry “an adventurer.” Brenda gets engaged to Peter, but learns he’s “a spineless coward” and they break up. Brenda decides to find an adventurous man and “change him into a settled, home-loving type!” She tries this on ski-jumper Bob: he loves her but says she wants “to make me forget I’m a man.” However, Brenda helps rescue Bob when he is stranded in the mountains and they reconcile. He promises to never risk his life unnecessarily again.
