After graduation, Abbie returns to her hometown but now considers it boring. She moves to New York and gets a job in a publishing firm. Abbie dates aspiring author Whit and allows him to use her apartment during the day to write. He was a fraud: they are both arrested and charged with running a gambling operation out of her apartment. Abbie’s lawyer Jim says only character witnesses can save her. Despite her snobbish behavior, Abbie’s hometown friends show up to testify and she is acquitted. She will also marry Jim.

Laura’s childhood in an orphanage has made her extremely possessive. She falls in love with boxer Joe and becomes angry when his manager Stan interferes with their romance. Laura gets Stan fired under false pretenses, but he doesn’t give her away. Joe starts losing bouts and Laura realizes she loves Stan. She tells Joe the truth and he reconciles with Stan. Joe wins the championship and helps Laura win Stan’s love.

Connie and her invalid mother accept distant cousin George’s offer to live in his mansion. George passes them off as wealthy socialites. Connie and Norman fall in love; George wants Norman to use his influence so that George’s nightclub license will be approved. Norman agrees, only because he thinks Connie comes from a respectable family. Connie discovers the club is a front for crooked gambling and tells Norman. The police raid the club but Norman breaks up with Connie, thinking she was in on the scam. However, Norman and Connie eventually reconcile.
