Natalie is the widow of a famous World War II hero. After eight years, she decides to resume a social life despite the scandal this causes. She falls in love with Perry, who’s five years younger than her, which increases the gossip. Natalie finds her late husband's journal in which he expresses the hope that, if he is killed, his wife will find love again. Once the journal is published, Natalie and Perry's problems are over.

Newspaper reporter Ellen has a crush on romance novelist Vance, although when she meets him she is surprised he says some of things he does about women. They fall in love, but Ellen discovers Vance's books have all been ghostwritten by Julia. When Ellen reads Vance's newest book, she finds that he described their love affair, and angrily writes an exposé. Julia says that Vance wrote his latest novel himself because he loves Ellen. Ellen fears her review has ruined everything, but her editor changed the story completely. Vance and Ellen will be married.

After Ellen's wealthy father dies, her relatives dispute the will, claiming Ellen was adopted and thus can't inherit. A scandal erupts and her friends desert her. Ellen runs away and wrecks her car. She is taken in by Jeff and his mother and stays on their farm. Ellen and Jeff fall in love, but she leaves so they won't be involved in the scandal. Ellen changes her mind and goes back. Jeff and his mother say they knew who she was all the time. Ellen also learns she will inherit her fortune after all.

John proposes to Susan but she is determined to prove she can look after herself. She gets a job as a cab driver, having driven an ambulance during the war. She's befriended by Bull, a cabbie and law student. Susan picks up a tipsy John, another woman and some friends; John causes her to wreck her cab. When he realizes it was Susan driving, John breaks their engagement. She loses her insurance due to the accident. Fortunately, Bull has passed the bar exam and Susan will marry him.
