Black Rider [Matt 'Doc' Masters] (introduction); Satan (Black Rider's horse); Jim Lathrop; Marie Lathrop; Bobby Lathrop; Blast Burrows (villain)
After driving rustlers away from the Lathrop ranch, the Black Rider confides to Bobby Lathrop the origin of how Matt Masters became the Black Rider. Matt's father was killed by rustlers when he was young. He avenged his father, and grew up to became a doctor. 'Doc' Masters must later take the alias of Black Rider, when he the Lathrop family is faced with the menace of Blast Burrows rustlers. Marie Lathrop cannot tolerate Doc Masters unwillingness to fight back, but deeply admires the Black Rider's courage.

The Apache named Dragon Face favors burning settlers at the stake. Aloysius Kare finds Dragon Face's handy-work, and must try to stop Dragon Face from convincing Chief Red Hawk that this is the way to deal with the white man's encroachment. His approach, unfortunately, puts Mary Gregory in harm's way, and the Apache Kid must rescue her from being burned at the stake.

Slade, an undercover federal marshal, is met in his hotel by Mort Riley. Riley tells that Governor Clinton has asked Slade to handle rancher Kisco Graves, who is driving settlers off of their lands. Ironically, Slade is sent to face the man who drove he and his father off their land when he was young.
