He proposes to her, but she has to hurriedly leave because her father must have his medicine by midnight. Reggie tracks her down and they will be married.

Mal returns and says he'll give Nan her freedom if she wishes it: he'll return the next day for her answer. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake intervenes: Nan is trapped in the wreckage but Mal helps rescue her. They get back together and in 1952 celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
