Joan Peters; Dan Peters; Meg Marlowe (neighbor); Richard Marlowe (neighbor)
Joan enjoys making a home for her husband Dan, but she's been raised to believe she's fit for nothing more than the dependent, featherbrain, housewife role. She wants to prove her mettle and takes an office job. Dan disapproves but Joan manages her house and her job equally well. Dan wants her at home and tries to punish her by taking out-of-town job assignments that keep him from the marriage bed for weeks at a time. Joan has proved herself to herself and tires of the office rat-race but must leave on her own terms. She can't quit and she can't allow herself to be fired without losing face. When she learns she is pregnant, she has a good reason for leaving the workplace. In the meantime, Dan has bought into his firm and their future looks prosperous.

Red; Mike Barody; Mary Ford
Red is a newbie telephone lineman and mentored by Mike Barody, a brash, ballsy weatherbeaten man with years of experience. When Red innocently and unwittingly flirts with Mike's girl, Mary Ford, Mike gives him a stern warning by dropping a heavy wrench close to his head. Time passes, and Mary's feelings for Mike cool. He's mystified and asks Red to find out the reason. Red discovers Mary is fed up with Mike's jealousy and his readiness to beat up any man that looks her way twice. She makes a pass at Red and he declines, but later admits he loves her. Mary and Mike are both happy to call it quits, and Red finally pairs up with Mary. All three remain friends despite the sudden changes.

Lucy Cooper; Glen Cooper; Dan Steele; Billy Steele
Glen and Dan are battlefield buds in Korea. When Dan is fatally wounded, Glen promises to take care of his motherless seven year old son, Billy. Back in the States, Glen is re-united with his wife Lucy and finds Billy in a dreary orphanage. While Lucy sympathizes with the boy, she also resents him. She wants to start a family of her own, but Glen's devotion to another woman's son annoys her. She becomes pregnant but her joy is dulled when Glen brings Billy home to live with them. One day, Lucy grows impatient with Billy, faints, and tumbles down the stairs. Billy telephones for help. Lucy gives birth to a healthy baby in hospital. She realizes Billy's quick thinking saved the baby's life and she welcomes the boy to the family.
