Ann, taught to shoot as a girl by her father, falls in love with carnival sharpshooter Jim. They team up but Jim later decides to begin a life of crime. Ann goes along but eventually wants to retire and start a family. They commit one last robbery and are tracked down by the police and killed.

In post-World War II Shanghai, "White Russian" Tanya learns the Communists will deport all Russians to the USSR when they take control of China. Tanya bails reporter Johnny out of jail in exchange for marriage, planning to divorce him when they reach the USA. Johnny refuses at first, because he loves Tanya, but eventually gives in. Tanya discovers she actually loves him, and arranges to have him picked up by the police so they can reconcile.

Bob, "scarred and lame for life," is working as a radio station cleaning man and is discovered by Fran. They do an on-air duet and go on to a long, successful and happy life.

Jane, Danny and Jim grew up together. Danny became a cop and Jim a criminal, but Jane can't decide between them. Jim swears he'll go straight if Jane marries him, but she learns he's resumed a life of crime and seriously wounded Danny during a robbery. When the police arrive, Jim tries to use Jane as a hostage but falls off a roof to his death. Danny will recover.
