Phyllis met Bruce at the library where she worked when he came to check out books on plastics. Their dating became more serious and Bruce wanted to set a date, but he had trouble getting his plastics business started because the banks wanted more security than he had to offer. Phyllis offered to lend him more money as an investment in their future. When she gets a letter telling her that Bruce had used his charm to get money away from the anonymous letter writer, Phyllis thinks it all adds up. But the letter was written by Bruce's secretary who had fallen in love with him.

Her aunt tried to warn her that it scared men off, but Lillian felt she was living in the past and there was too much competition. Lillian set her sights on Ross who worked for the same company she did. Ross lived alone with his kid sister and Lillian was able to get in his good graces by doing some favors for him. But the little girl saw through Lillian's attempts to get married to Ross and told her he was engaged to someone in another town.

One night she decides to elope with Dave and rides out to his place only to overhead Dave telling her father that he would get his ranch one way or another -- even if he had to marry his daughter to do it.

But given the chance, Gene worked hard and moved up to become a full-fledged reporter. Gene began to have feelings for Ted, who had helped her when she first started. But at times, their professional rivalry got in the way their personal relationship.
