Delia Markam; June Markam; Max; Rod Crane
June works in a factory to finance her younger sister Delia’s art education. June dates Delia’s art teacher Rod, and decides Delia should change her focus to fashion design so she won’t wind up a “starving artist.” When June smashes a painting Delia wanted to enter in a contest, Rod breaks up with her. Delia, depressed, drops her studies and goes to work in the factory with June. Remorseful, June poses for a portrait painted by Delia. Delia wins a prize and returns to art school and June reconciles with Rod.

Helen loves lawyer Ken but is afraid he’ll dump her if he learns her brother Jim served time in prison. Jim gets a job with Ken but doesn’t reveal that he’s Helen’s brother. Helen makes it clear she dislikes ex-convicts and won’t associate with Jim, despite Ken’s attempt to defend the young man. Jim is ostracised and quits. Helen admits Jim’s her brother and Ken says Jim went to prison to protect him. He breaks up with Helen. Helen tracks down Jim and apologises; she helps finance his studies and he gets his law degree. Ken and Helen get back together.

Babs; Chris; Fred; Laura Ames; Monty Bruner
Babs is raised by her strict father Fred, who says her mother ran off with another man. Babs dates Monty although he thinks she’s “easy” because of her mother’s reputation. They’re in a gambling club when it’s raided and Babs is saved by Laura and Chris, a university student who parks cars there. Chris and Babs fall in love and she leaves home when her father reproves her. Babs goes back to the club with Monty and he accidentally shoots himself. Laura takes the blame, telling Babs she is her mother. Babs reunites her mother and father and will marry Chris herself.
