Lucille and her department store co-worker Barry will be married as soon as he gets a promotion. Store manager Clay is attracted to Lucille and Barry urges her to be “nice” to Morgan and put in a good word for him. Clay gives Barry a promotion in a store elsewhere and Barry agrees to let Lucille date Clay while he’s gone. Lucille and Clay fall in love; they go to visit Barry and find him with another woman. Lucille can now love Clay freely.

Paula runs “around with a pretty wild crowd” then contracts pneumonia. Her parents send her to live with her aunt in the country to recuperate. Paula is bored until she and farmer Carl fall in love. Paula says she doesn’t want to live in the country and Carl refuses to leave his farm, so they break up. Paula returns to the city; Carl follows and agrees to get a job there for Paula’s sake. However, when Paula snubs his friends, Carl goes home. Paula realises Carl “is worth more than the rest of you put together!” and she heads for the farm.

Carol and Art are in love, but he wants to finish college before marrying her. Carol’s friend Helen says Art may find someone else while he’s away and advises Carol to “trap” Art into marriage. While they’re in the countryside, Carol slashes the car’s tires and she and Art have to spend the night together, waiting. Carol says they have to get engaged to prevent gossip. Art agrees. Carol later confesses the truth and he says he knew it all the time, but doesn’t care.

Karen and her father live in Coalville and she hates it. She takes the bus to the nearby city and meets Jeff, concealing her origins from him. They plan to marry, and Karen decides to confess everything to Jeff and introduce him to her father. When they arrive, they learn there has been a cave-in at the mine and Karen’s father is trapped. He and the other men are rescued. Jeff says he doesn’t care about Karen’s background: “I’ll be glad to have a coal town girl for a wife.”
