Fran Wolnicki; Mr. Wolnicki; Mrs. Wolnicki; Charlie Milton; Bobbie
Fran is ashamed of her working class, immigrant parents, and aspires to a life that would “be worthy of me!” This makes her seem spoiled and aloof in school. Fran dates Charlie, whose parents are also working-class, but her parents don’t approve of him. Charlie and Fran get drunk and elope on the night of the school prom. They quit school and Charlie goes to work in a factory, but they live beyond their means and go into debt. Charlie abandons Fran. She goes home to her parents and re-enrolls in school. Perhaps someday Charlie will return, when he’s ready to face adult responsibilities.
