James Bond 007
James Bond; M; head of Section S; Vesper Lynd; Le Chiffre (KGB paymaster); Felix Leiter (CIA); Rene Mathis (Deuxieme Bureau); Heinz Muntz (KGB)
Bond is sent to play high-stakes baccarat against Le Chiffre, a KGB paymaster whose job is to raise funds to support the spread of international Communism. Le Chiffre has lost money badly, and must win it back or be murdered by his bosses, which is just what MI-6 wants. With extra financial help from the CIA, Bond wins, but is then captured and tortured-- only to be saved by the arrival of a KGB assassin. With Le Chiffre dead and his mission over, Bond slowly recovers and dreams of quitting the service and marrying Vesper, until he learns the shocking truth about her.

The 1st Daily Express story faithfully adapted Ian Fleming's 1st 007 novel from 1953. The unusual story structure, where the climax appears to take place only halfway into the story, is quite similar to that of the film VERTIGO. The novel has been adapted to film 3 times: the first half of the book in the 1954 live tv episode of CLIMAX!; the baccarat game and subsequent car chase as a 10-minute section in the latter part of the otherwise completely unconnected (and incoherent) 1967 farce; and surprisingly, in its entirely, as the 2nd half of the 2006 film, which added an action climax the book probably could have used.

James Bond 007
James Bond; Felix Leiter; Buonaparte Ignace Gallia ("Mr. Big"); Miss Solitaire; Blubbermouth; "The Robber" (bait merchant); Strangways (MI-6, Jamaica); Quarrel
In Harlem, Bond and Felix Leiter go after Mr. Big, who's using recovered pirate treasure to help finance KGB operations, and voodoo to keep his crime empire in line. He meets Solitaire, who's forced to use her psychic ability to help Big, until Bond helps her escape. Down in Florida, Bond discovers Big is smuggling gold via rare and "dangerous" fish, but Felix is almost killed when he's dumped into a shark tank. In Jamaica, Bond catches up with Big, but he and Solitaire are almost killed by being dragged behind Big's yacht over a shark-infested reef.

Story #2. Faithful (if severely "toned-down") adaptation of Ian Fleming's 2nd 007 novel from 1954. The 1973 film used so little of the novel, much of it turned up in later films, including: the keel-hauling scene in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (1981); the kidnap and mauling of Felix, and the fight at the fish warehouse in LICENCE TO KILL (1989). LIVE AND LET DIE was, oddly, the shortest strip adaptation of any of Fleming's novels.

James Bond 007
James Bond; Sir Hugo Drax; M; Lord Basildon (Blade's Club chairman); Bill Tanner; Gala Brand (Scotland Yard Special Branch); Dr. Walter (chief rocket scientist); Willy Krebs (Drax' personal assistant); Detective Inspector Vivian (Gala's fiance)
M puts Bond onto investigating wealthy and popular industrialist and philanthropist Sir Hugo Drax-- because he cheats at cards. After, Bond replaces a security man at Drax's factory where he's building England's 1st nuclear missile, and teams with undercover lady cop Gala Brand. After several harrowing incidents, including one where Bond's beloved Bentley is destroyed, they discover the secret of Drax's mysterious past. He's really a Nazi who's been posing as an Englishman since the end of WW2, and intends to use his missile to finish the job Adolph Hitler started-- by leveling London!

Story #3. Faithful adaptation of Ian Fleming's 3rd 007 novel from 1955. Apart from the character of Drax and a sequence in which Bond and his fellow spy are left to die in a rocket exhaust pit, virtually nothing from the book turned up in the 1979 film. However, the climax-- a nuclear missile being redirected to destroy a submarine, was used 2 years earlier in THE SPY WHO LOVED ME (1977); the scene where Bond out-cheats the villain at a game of chance, which inspired a similar scene in GOLDFINGER, also turned up in the film OCTOPUSSY (1983), complete with the line, "Spend the money quickly!"; and the idea of a rich and popular industrialist who was really a foreign agent in disguise was used in DIE ANOTHER DAY (2002). Based on John McLusky's art, Hugo Drax and Gala Brand somewhat resemble actors Howard Marion Crawford and Honor Blackman.
