Elizabeth "Libby"; Aunt Pat; Stu; Kurt Hilson
Libby quits her teaching job and moves to New York to study singing at the “Beethoven School of Music.” She lives with her “Bohemian” Aunt Pat, who tries to make Libby loosen up. Libby meets writer Kurt and is attracted to him, but then discovers he’s the wealthy nephew of one of Pat’s friends. Libby fears he only likes her because she’s sensible and could help him manage his fortune, so she pretends to be a spend-thrift and they argue. She returns to her small-town teaching job but Kurt follows her there and they will be married.

The title presumably refers to the stairs Joe has to take to reach Harriet's apartment. However, the phrase "twelve steps" usually refers to the Alcoholics Anonymous plan to conquer substance abuse.
