Lila expects to marry Dave, but he turns out to be a two-timer who says “I’m just not the marrying kind!” Lila vows to never fall in love again and to make fools of every man she meets. She dates Les, a divorced police detective, and even though she thinks she may love Les, Lila turns him down when he proposes. Lila later learns his ex-wife had been unfaithful to him and was part of “a narcotics gang.” Lila apologizes to Les and they reconcile.

Lora, tired of her boring boyfriend George, takes a job as a waitress at a fancy summer resort. Sheltering from a storm, she meets cynical Hank in a beach cabin and sparks fly. However, Lora begins to date wealthy guest Harvey. Hank says his wife divorced him for “some guy with a big bankroll” and considers Lora a gold-digger as well. However, Harvey says “men in my social position don’t marry waitresses! That’s what happens in fairy tales...” Lora decides to marry Hank instead.

Pam falls in love with Ben when he is hired to repair her wealthy family’s boat. She decides to marry him. After the wedding, Pam expects Ben to work for her father and join their social set, despite her mother’s warning: “Don’t try to make him over!” Ben refuses, and resists Pam’s attempts to integrate him into their upper-class milieu. Ben finally asks for a divorce. Pam realizes she “couldn’t buy Ben!” and vows to change. Ben and Pam are reunited.
