Gail quits her job as a waitress in a diner owned by Fred due to his womanising ways. She takes only the money owed her and leaves a note. Reporter Steve gets her a job as companion to the elderly Mrs. Latham. Gail becomes engaged to her employer’s son Steve. Fred sees her photo in the newspaper and contacts her: she’s been charged with stealing money from him but he’ll drop the charges if she marries him. The real culprit was another waitress, Laura, who was jealous. When this comes out, Steve reaffirms his love for Gail.

When fellow student Ermine introduces them to producer Thorton, Rita and Walton break up over their differing goals. In New York, Rita discovers Thorton was a fake, part of Ermine’s scheme to have Walton for herself. Rita works her way up to featured parts on television, but misses Walton. However, he shows up and they decide to go back to their small town so he can be happy.

Leila works in a nightclub kitchen but is given a role in the floor show by owner Kip to spite his girlfriend Myra. Leila is a hit and Kip proposes to her. However, while he’s away, Leila dates wealthy Anthony and he also asks her to marry him. Kip and Leila break up, but when Leila and Anthony visit Mexico, she learns he never intended to marry her. She’s reduced to working in a sleazy club there, falls ill, and telegraphs Kip for help. Kip flies her back to the USA. When she recovers, she agrees to marry him and return to performing in his club.
