Randall Crowley, who controls the Beast-men, also controls a giant electronic octopus and he has it appear to "eat" Janis and Tara. Randall plans to kill the various exotic animals on the Dark Continent to sell their pelts. Fortunately the Shade is looking for Tara and enters Randall's subconscious. Randall goes mad thinking that the animals he has killed are going to drown him in their blood, and he falls over a cliff and is impaled on one of the skinning hooks. Tara concludes that Janis and Charles Lambert will be good caretakers for the Dark Continent.

In an alien spaceship Mara transfers the power transferred from Captain Paragon to herself and then escapes. Captain Paragon, who is acting very irrationally due to the LSD he's taken, is found by Nicole Latimer, the daughter of his old friend Richard Latimer. When Captain Paragon went on a mission in Korea to save Richard he first encountered the Shroud, who put Captain Paragon in a supernatural trance for 15 years. Richard agrees to try to help Captain Paragon figure out what long-term effects the LSD might have on his body and they prepare to run experiments on him.
