Synopsis:
The Golden Age Batman retires from crimefighting after accidentally killing his wife Selina Kyle Wayne, the former Catwoman, when she is blackmailed into committing one more job by a former associate, Silky Chernak. As a result, Selina and Bruce's daughter, Helena, becomes the Huntress and vows to fight crime like her father did and brings Silky to justice.

The story is the origin of the Helena Wayne Huntress. Some sources identify this issue as the joint first appearance of the character with All-Star Comics (DC, 1976 series) #69. Those sources claim both issues were released on August 24, 1977. However, copyright records state All-Star Comics #69 was published on August 23, while DC Super Stars #17 was published on August 25.
In the text page for this issue, Paul Levitz mentions that Joe Orlando had to step in as guest editor for this story, as DC policy at the time said that no editor should write for himself. Since Levitz was the writer for this story, Orlando had to step in as the editor.
