Kyle crash lands on Earth in a spaceship bearing a casket. Guy, John, and Hal attend a baseball game together, but Hal's presence affects the other fans. Black Hand tries to steal a Green Lantern ring from Oliver Queen, but is stopped by Ollie and the Spectre. Guy's body explodes in his Warriors bar just as Coast City is being rebuilt by means unknown. While the JLA and the JSA try to make sense of it all, Carol journeys to Ferris Aircraft for old time's sake and watches as the ramshackle company is knit back together piece by piece...and is greeted by Hal in his old flight jacket.

As Hal and Carol are sharing a private moment, they are interrupted by the members of the Justice League, who want to know what Hal is doing to Coast City and to Guy Gardner, who appears to be rejecting his Vuldarian DNA. John Stewart turns on the League, and to stop him Hal becomes the Spectre. Meanwhile, Guy revives from his coma, is given a duplicate of the ring Ollie has, and becomes a Green Lantern again. Elsewhere, Kilowog confronts Kyle Rayner, seeking the casket in the spaceship, but the casket is guarded by Ganthet, who says Hal Jordan's body is protected by the Guardians themselves.

As Kilowog fights Ganthet for Hal Jordan's corpse and John attacks the JLA, Kyle -- who unlike his fellow Green Lanterns retains control of his own mind -- journeys to the JLA Watchtower and reveals to Green Arrow the truth about Parallax, and explains how the evil entity came to possess Hal Jordan. As Hal fights a losing battle for control of his soul against both the Spectre and Parallax, Sinestro surprises Kyle and Ollie and reveals that he is responsible for the resurgence of Parallax.

Sinestro takes on Kyle and Green Arrow, while Ganthet frees Guy, John, and Kilowog's minds from Parallax's influence. As Earth's heroes join the fight against Parallax, Hal and the Spectre fight Parallax from inside, finally splitting into their three separate entities. Parallax takes refuge inside Ganthet as the Spectre and the soul of Hal Jordan journey to the ever-after. But Hal follows a light trail set by Ganthet that leads him back to his own body. Hal calls his ring, which flies back to him from Green Arrow, and Green Lantern Hal Jordan steps out from his own coffin.
