Findlay takes a pot-shot from the deck of the ice-breaker he is serving on and kills Polar Bear cub Shako's mother for sport. The Captain orders the two men onto the ice to finish the cub as well, but Shako bites Findlay in the leg and his gun goes off accidently, killing Branson. Shako escapes and has to fend for himself for a couple of weeks. When next he encounters the humans he manages to kill Findlay, then boards the by now stuck ice-breaker. Just as the Captain is about to shoot him, the ship succumbs to the pressure of the ice and sinks. Shako makes his escape and his adventures begin.
