Subject Matter
Mr Jack Warner (the father); Kip Warner (the boy); Jerry (the male ringtail coon); Mrs Warner; Star (the black three-year-old colt); Sam Richard's hounds; female coon
Oh, Charley--look! What are they? Racoons, Pat.
Dad gives Kip a baby coon, Jerry, whose endearing antics earn him forgiveness when Kip feeds him table scraps, for which Kip gets walloped. Time passes. One day when the family is out, Kip knocks over a lantern, setting the house ablaze, jumps on Star's back, raids Sam Richard's cornfield, mixes it up with Sam's hounds from atop Star, drinks from a mountain stream, and makes friends with a lady coon.

Du Bois script submitted November 27, 1948.

This archivist preserves both the spelling and usage of Du Bois's 1948 script with respect to both "racoon" (which American-English now spells "raccoon," while British-English still retains the "racoon" spelling); and "coon," which is a legitimate word of rural American-English for "racoon." Chuckwagon Charley is a rustic, Du Bois, a didactic wordsmith, wrote him as such, and this archivist preserves that.
