Tarzan of the Apes
John Clayton [Lord Greystoke]; Lady Alice; sea captain; Black Michael; mutineers; Tarzan; Kala; Kerchak; Tublat; Sabor; Bolgani; Great Apes
The Fuwalda, a barkentine of about one hundred tons, was a vessel of a type often seen in the coastwise trade in the far southern Atlantic, their crews composed of the outscourings of the sea...
When the infant Tarzan's parents die after being marooned in Africa, childless Kala adopts the baby and raises him as a Great Ape. Over time his superior intelligence begins to give him an edge over his fellows. He repeatedly explores his parents' cabin, teaches himself the rudiments of reading, and finds a hunting knife which he uses, although gravely wounded, to slay the attacking Bolgani.

Now, fully recovered from his battle with Bolgani the Gorilla, Tarzan became anxious to return to the cabin with its wondrous contents.
From his parents' cabin Tarzan learns to make rope and use a lariat. When the hunter Kulonga kills Kala the furious Tarzan slays Kulonga. He torments Kulonga's people, but from them steals a bow with poison-tipped arrows. When Kerchak attacks him Tarzan slays Kerchak, making himself the King of the Apes.
