Celia’s boss Phil asks her to make friends with aspiring songwriter Lincoln, so that Lincoln will sell his songs to their publishing firm on favorable terms. Celia and Lincoln fall in love and she’s fired when she types up a fair contract for him. Phil and his partner decide to sign the contract anyway, but Celia resigns to become Lincoln’s wife and manager.

When she learns the truth, Melinda rejects him but Craig tells her off and admits he was also in the military and outranked her. They reconcile.

Bill returns and doesn’t seem sad about Mae, because he really loves Dottie now.

She starts hanging around with the “Horton Street” crowd but Mike likes her even less, because he thinks her new friends are low-class. Mike tells her “it doesn’t pay to lower your standards to try to win a man! Gentlemen always prefer ladies!” and they kiss.
