Synopsis: Clare had met Ross in England while he was on leave. He was due to leave for Nigeria for eighteen months to finish out his contract at a plantation in Bula, in the bush, miles away from civilization. She was mad to travel and he needed a wife in the bush to ease the loneliness, so they made a contract. They would marry and he would take her to west Africa. After eighteen months, they would part with no regrets. Clare had agreed because she hoped that one day he would learn to love her.
