According to Molly Guptill Manning's history, When Books Went To War, editions were printed in monthly batches (or series) of titles, designated alphabetically by month and numerically according to total run. This system was used for editions A-1 through J-302. Batches K through T were designated with the monthly letter, and then numerically within each batch. Numbering according to total run began again with U-655, and ended with the final title, designated TT-1322. Beginning with series II, books took the form of a standard U.S. pocket paperback. Early issues were stapled, later issues glue-bound. Only a few comics titles were published. Executive director Archibald Ogden stated in 1943, "The paper selected for the Armed Services Editions is two grades higher than newsprint."
