What we at GCD call the publication date (this issue's absent cover date, which would have been what newsstand retailers called the pull date) is known to be July-December (1950 is in the indicia). It is known by applying data to the 1951-1952 Dell Lassie cover date formula. The data are the on sale dates of issues #1 and #2, per Copyright Entries' reports of what they call these issues' dates of publication (the which we at GCD correctly call the on sale dates). The relevant cover date formula derives from: the cover dates of issues #3,4,5,6,7,8; and the on sale dates of issues #3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Their relationship follows the pattern {[X+1] through [Y]} = Z, where X is the first full month the issue was on sale, Y is the first full month the next issue was on sale, and Z is the cover date.
The previous indexer inferred the publication date from the code number. The code number is Lassie O.S. #282-506, which would indicate that this book was planned as a one-shot to be Four Color #282 and that its first full month on sale would be 1950 June. There is also an excess of blank space in the indicia between the title "LASSIE" and "Published by Dell Publishing Co." into which the "No. 1" is dropped. That extra space, one presumes, was intended to accomodate the larger Four Color issue number.
