First recorded meeting of Spider-Man and Dr. Strange, Steve Ditko's 2 most famous creations. Xandu would return in Marvel Team-Up (Marvel, 1972 series) #21 (May 1974). The scene of Spidey being sucked down thru the dimensional opening may have inspired a similar scene in the 1969 Spider-Man cartoon, "Revolt In The Fifth Dimension." Synopsis and notes provided by Henry Kujawa (July 2007).

Per Nick Caputo: "Spider-Man figure is by Kirby, probably inked by Brodsky. I spoke to John Romita and he recalls being in the office when Kirby was correcting the cover. It was changed because Spider-Man's rear was facing the reader". An unaltered version of the cover has been published in several foreign edition reprints, including L'Uomo Ragno # 29. Our mildly terrific tale opens in a crowded neighborhood gym, where we find a not-overly-bright habitue named Joe Smith indulging himself in one of his ever-present day-dreams--
Average Joe, Joe Smith, fails at being a fighter and tries his hand at acting. Dressed up as a robotic monster, he is zapped with electricity and chemicals which causes him to go on a violent spree against those who doubted his abilities. Meanwhile, Norman Osborn puts a price on Spider-Man’s head and our hero is plagued with goons trying to bump him off. Pete narrowly misses meeting Mary Jane.
