According to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund website, Zap Comix #4 was successfully prosecuted for obscenity in the case of the People of New York v. Kirkpatrick. The ruling was issued on October 28, 1970. It was upheld on appeal. The determination of obscenity was effectively vacated in 1973 with the U. S. Supreme Court ruling in Miller v. California, which established new legal guidelines for communities.

Early printings by Print Mint. Later printings by Last Gasp with the Apex Novelty logo on front cover.
